Winning one state championship title is hard enough.

Grabbing back-to-back crowns magnifies the difficulty immensely.

Saturday at the 2025 West Virginia State Track Meet, a pair of Nicholas County multi-sport athletes successfully handled the challenge and the pressure to become two-time state champions.

Competing in the Class AA High Jump event, seniors Adrienne Truman secured the girls title, while Miner doubled up in the boys event for the rare feat.

Both athletes felt different levels of pressure Saturday.

"It feels good. I guess we just jump good," Miner said about the wins. "I was more confident this year. There was a little pressure, but you always have pressure on you. Being a state champion last year, you want to go win it again and be a two-time state champion, so there is that pressure. You don't want to lose."

Truman, who has admitted to battling nerves over her career, once again had to settle herself to win her second title.

"I was a whole lot more nervous than I was last year," Truman said. "I still wish I could have made (5-feet-4), but I am beyond blessed to have this title two years in a row. This is really amazing."

Entering high school, the thoughts of being a track star were not on the radar for Truman. A lot has changed in four years. The Nicholas County standout has already committed to the University of Charleston Track and Field for college.

"I really thought basketball was what I was going to go in, but I have found a love for track," Truman said. "It doesn't put as much stress on me."

Her love for basketball steered her toward track and cross country for basketball conditioning. Track and cross country, in turn, led her to unexpected heights.

Truman was the AA Region 3 cross-country champion last October, even though she admitted she hated running

“I feel good right now, but I hate running with a passion,” Truman said, laughing after the regional meet. “I never imagined I would be a regional champion. I am really happy and grateful for that."

The high jump event started with a friend, Bri Broyles, for fun.

Unfortunately, Broyles passed away in August of 2021, but Truman carried on in her memory. Saturday, Truman still sported the necklace worn in honor of her friend, along with a rubber bracelet.

"It means everything to me," Truman said about her win. "I really wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for her. It just makes me happy that I can still do this."

In addition to winning their second High Jump title, both athletes also earned All-State honors in the Long Jump.

Truman finished second in a tight battle, while Miner was fourth overall on the boys side.

"I am very proud of how I did today," Truman said. "I only lost the long jump by (one inch)."
