Vince Umberger has been a key to multi-sport success for Beckley

Umberger plays soccer, football and tennis for the Flying Eagles

The past year for Beckley junior Vince Umberger has been one for the ages.

Umberger was a starting mid-fielder for the Class AAA state champion Flying Eagles boy's soccer team last fall while kicking for the football team that made the postseason playoffs.

In the spring, Umberger won a key back-and-forth semifinal match at the state tennis tournament to send Beckley to the championship finals for the first time in over 60 years.

The icing on the cake came this summer when he helped lead his Legacy FC soccer team to the third straight West Virginia State Cup championship.

Umberger talked with me about those teams and the challenges of playing soccer and football in the same season.
