James Monroe scored eight runs across the third and fourth innings to rally past Midland Trail, 10-7 in the opening round of Class AA Region 3, Section 2 softball tournament action Tuesday at Oak Hill High School.

With the Mavs trailing 3-1 heading to the third frame, Bryleigh Thomas stepped in and gave James Monroe the lead for good with a three-run blast to centerfield.

The Mavericks added to the lead an inning later when a double from Chloe Bert led to three runs and was followed by a two-run blast from Thomas for the 9-3 lead.

Thomas finished with three hits and five RBI, while Bert had two hits to drive in four runs. Thomas also earned the win in the circle with nine strikeouts, surrendering no earned runs.

Jessi Mooney and Presley Walker each had two hits and one RBI for the Patriots.

James Monroe will travel to No. 1 seed Liberty Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game. The Raiders (14-8) rolled past Summers County, 22-0 Tuesday on a one-hit shutout from Maddie Cox in Glen Daniel.

Liberty collected 20 hits with 10 going for extra bases.

McKinlea Hill, Alyssa Scarbro and Stella Brown each hit a home run. Hill added a triple and had three RBI, while Scarbro also had a triple and two RBI.

Brown had a total of three hits, including a double, driving in two runs.

Katie Mullens added a triple, a double and one RBI, while Cox and Kanyon Green each hit a double. Green had a two hits in the game and drove in five runs for the Raiders. Emma Hartshorn had two hits and two RBI.

Summers County and Midland Trail will follow the Liberty and James Monroe battle in an elimination game Wednesday at approximately 8 p.m.
