Former Shady Spring State Champion earns qualifying spot in U.S. Open qualifier Tuesday
Former Shady Spring state champion, Todd Duncan of Daniels, was one of four qualifiers and two alternates in the 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifying event Tuesday at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown.
Duncan finished at four under par (-4) 67. Other qualifiers were professional golfer Logan Perkins of Atlanta, Ga., tying with Kaleb Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn., at five under par (-5) 66 and Westy McCabe of Dallas, Tx., finishing at three under par (-3) 68.
All four qualifiers have ties to the West Virginia University golf team; Perkins graduated two years ago, and the other three are currently on the team. The two alternates were Nathan Piatt of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Max Green of Okatie, SC. They finished at two under par (-2) 69 and one under par (-1) 70, respectively.

The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), in support and collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), conducted the U.S. Open local qualifier. The U.S. Open is scheduled for June 12th to 15th at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
“We are over the moon, thrilled and excited about being privileged to host over 70 players from around the country vying for the four qualifying and two alternate spots,” said The Pines’ Head Golf Professional Russell Reid. “It’s a heavily stacked field and I expect scores to be unbelievably low. I couldn’t wait to see the level of players and the skill and competition here today. We hope someone who qualifies here today will get past the regionals and get to play at Oakmont.”
“We are honored to play host to one of the 110 U.S. Open local qualifiers across the country with 71 golfers here today. With the horrific storms that hit this area recently, we were thrilled to see what Russell Reid and his staff have achieved to recover from the damage,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “I’m always amazed to see where our participants call home. In today’s field, Pennsylvania topped the list with 24 players, while West Virginia fielded 11 players. Other participants came from California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, plus Costa Rica. We’re glad for the chance to let them experience at least a part of West Virginia.”
