Former WVU Tech golfer Bryson Beaver two shots back at 92nd WV Open

The former Herbert Hoover State Champion shoots 4-under par in round one

Hurricane - The opening round of the 92nd West Virginia Open took place Wednesday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club and some familiar champions have moved to the top of the leader board.

Ryan Bilby, who won the title in 2023 at Berry Hills Country Club, holds a two-shot lead over 12-time champions David Bradshaw and former WVU Tech standout Bryson Beaver.

The Follansbee native recorded seven birdies on the day against one bogey for 6-under par 66 to lead the field.

Beaver started his round on the back nine and recorded four birdies before making his only bogey of the day at No. 6, his 15th hole of the round. The former River State Conference Tournament Champion bounced right back with birdie on the next hole to shoot 68 on his opening round.

David Bradshaw, 12-time WV Open champion, is tied with Beaver after completing a clean round consisting of four birdies and 14 pars.

Reigning Junior Amateur champions Tommy Evans is among the foursome at 3-under par, along with three-time champion Christian Brand.

Jack Michael won the AAA individual state championship last fall for Cabell Midland. Michael is 2-under par after round one and will be heading to Morgantown this fall to play for West Virginia University.

Defending champion and former WVU standout, Todd Duncan opened with a round of 76 (+4).

The WV Open Championship is a 54-hole stroke play championship with the field cut to the low 60 players and ties at the completion of 36 holes.
