On a night where the field at Van Meter Stadium was named for legendary Beckley head coach Pete Culicerto, the Flying Eagles started quick and finished strong to knock off Washington 41-20.

Gage Burdette scored twice in the opening quarter sandwiched around a 58-yard strike from Gage Price to Preston Clary for a 20-0 lead.

The Patriots chipped away at the deficit with two touchdown runs from Kyle Athey in the second quarter and one from Allen Casey early in the third to tie the game at 20-20.

Beckley regained the lead in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard strike from Price to Clary and never looked back.

Javontae Wynes scored on a one-yard dive and Price hit Zamier Jones on an eight-yard pass for the final margin.

Beckley will host rival Greenbrier East Friday night. The Spartans opened the season with a 39-27 win over Riverside.
