Expectations were high for the James Monroe girls basketball team headed in to the 2025-26 season.

Not only were Lady Maverick fans hopeful of another state tournament berth, but whispers of another championship title were being heard as well.

The big prize is a distinct possibility.

As the season makes its turn down the home stretch, James Monroe appears to be in full gallop towards the finish line.

Saturday night inside the War Zone, the AA No. 1-rated Lady Mavericks once again put on an impressive performance in a top-10 showdown.

Jumping out to an 18-2 lead in the first five minutes of play, James Monroe ran over AA No. 6 Wyoming East, 78-47.

Lady Mavericks head coach Shari Helvey talked about the win which moved James Monroe to 15-0 on the season.

Wyoming East hit the first bucket of the contest, but unfortunately for the home team, that was for the most part the only bright spot of the night.

The visitors from Monroe County proceeded to run of 18 straight points to put the Lady Warriors in a deep hole just five minutes into the contest.

The Lady Warriors settled in and pulled within 12 points after the first quarter and cut the deficit to 10 points with 6:48 to play before the half.

James Monroe answered with five quick points, however, and led 33-19 at the break.

Inspired play from Abi Baker, who led all scorers with 26 points, helped Wyoming East keep the deficit around 12 points for the first part of the second half, but the home squad could get no closer the rest of the way.

The final 4:27 of the stanza belonged to the Lady Mavericks who closed on a 13-5 run to lead, 53-33 with eight minutes to play.

Six James Monroe players scored eight points or more led by freshman Lydia Dunlap with 21 points.

Trinty Hill followed with 14 points, while Mya Dunlap added 12 and Peighton Griffith scored 11 points. Kendall Long recorded nine points and Monaka Moore finished with eight points.

Baker was the lone Lady Warrior to score in double figures.

Wyoming East head coach Ryan Davidson talked about the game Saturday.

Both teams will have some key match-ups this week.

James Monroe will travel to AAA No. 4 Nitro Tuesday before a regional clash at home against Midland Trail Wednesday. The Lady Mavs head to AA No. 8 Philip Barbour Saturday.

Wyoming East hosts regional opponent Summers County Monday and travels to county rival Westside Wednesday. The Lady Warriors battle AA No. 4 Logan at Willie Akers Arena Thursday.
