HS Softball: Logan's Adkins quiets Independence bats

Coal City - Logan pitcher Myleigh Adkins pitched a grueling 10-inning battle against AAAA No. 2 Cabell Midland Monday night, throwing over 150 pitches.
Head coach Levi Curry did not plan on starting his all-stater Tuesday night when the AA No. 1 Wildcats came to Coal City to battle AAA No. 4 Independence.
Adkins statement to her coach was, "give me the ball."
The junior hurler backed her words up with a 17-strikeout performance to help Logan secure a 7-3 win over the Patriots, sweeping the regular season series.

"We went against Cabell (Midland) last night, who's four-A and went to extras. She pitched the whole game and pitched well. She is the real deal and she is getting better each game," Logan head coach Levi Curry said Tuesday night. "We put a lot more responsibility on her this year to get her ready for tournament time and she has answered. If you challenge her, she does really good. If she wants the ball, she gets it."
Adkins was also solid at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, but hitting out of an unfamiliar position.
"She usually bats third, I moved her to the lead-off spot today and she looked at me like I was crazy," Curry said, laughing. "A lot of teams don't want to pitch to her and you can see why. We take advantage of that. She hits a lot of home runs. That was good hitting tonight and she got the barrel on it."

The lead-off double from Adkins gave Logan a 1-0 lead when Ashlin Brumfield ripped an RBI-triple two batters later.
However, as was the case most of the night, with the Wildcats on the verge of a big inning, Independence found a way to escape catastrophic damage.
When Lauren Adkins' bunt turned into a double play, the Patriots quickly grabbed the momentum going into the bottom of the inning.
Instead, the Logan hurler stopped the home team in its tracks, setting the first nine batters down in order, seven by strikeout.
"We did a little better job with her down (at Logan)," Independence head coach Ken Adkins said. "She pitched 10 innings yesterday, so you're thinking she might be a little off, but she was jacked up today. Like Mike Tyson said, everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face."
"Our plan was not to swing at pitches over our head," Adkins went on to say. "We swung at pitches over our head, 17 times tonight. It took me until the seventh inning to convince my kids not to swing at pitches over their head. Then we finally got on her some, but we haven't seen speed like that this year."
Adkins, who was clocked at over 60 mph prior to the game, mowed though the lethal Patriots line-up, allowing only one hit through six innings.

While Adkins was handcuffing the home team, the Wildcats took a solid lead 7-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
However, Logan had opportunities to end the game early, but failed at getting the big hit to close out the win. Two intentional passes to Brumfield in key situations helped short-circuit the visitors.
"We didn't hit the ball well tonight. We weren't patient," Curry said. "I think we left the bases loaded three times which drives me crazy."
Ava Parks doubled for her second hit of the game to open the seventh for Indy and scored on a single from Emma Lilly. Bella Lilly's double made it 7-2 and for a brief moment, Adkins looked human.
The hard throwing righty quickly calmed the water with back-to-back strikeouts.
"The secret to good pitching is getting ahead of the batter and making them swing at bad pitches," the Patriot coach said. "If you can do that, you are the winner."
Emma Simpson singled home the final run for the Patriots before Adkins closed out the win with strikeout No. 17 on the night.
The performance by the junior standout sent her over 200 strikeouts for the season and over 500 for her young career.
