The Flying Eagles were coming off of a stellar four-year run guided by nine seniors who combined for nine individual state championship and four straight Region 3 crowns.

Understanding the challenges ahead for his team, new head coach Chris Matkins was anxious to continue the success under former head coach Matt Osborne.

Saturday inside the Flying Eagles gymnasium, Matkins' mat-men made their own statement.

Sending six wrestlers to the 14 championship matches, the Flying Eagles bested second-place Oak Hill 215.5 - 177.5.

The state wrestling tournament will be held March 5-7 at The Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington.

The top-four finishers in each weight class qualify for the state tournament.
