The theme Tuesday for Greenbrier East in the AAA Region 3 co-final clash with Nicholas County was simple - don't come out flat.

The No. 1 ranked Lady Spartans came out more like a steamroller.

Jumping out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter, Greenbrier East cruised past the Lady Grizzlies, 66-42.

The Lady Spartans earned the No. 1-seed in the 2026 Girls State High School Basketball Tournament and will play No. 8-seed Hampshire Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

Greenbrier East girls head coach and the U.S. Senator from West Virginia, Jim Justice discussed the win.

Playing her final game inside Spartan Gym, Kennedy Stewart fittingly ignited the Lady Spartans with a 3-pointer before she added another bucket for a 5-0 lead.

Fellow senior captain Mackenna McClure drilled a corner-3-ball before Madalyn Jones snapped the scoring drought for Nicholas County.

Unfortunately for the visitors, that was the only bucket for another extended period that saw the home team start to run away with the game.

Another corner triple from McClure, two buckets from Ava Workman and a deuce from Hannah Fuller gave East a commanding 15-point bulge after one quarter.

Kala Waller opened the second period by scoring on a nice back-cut ahead of a long ball from Maddie Baker.

Back-to-back triples from Stewart and two made free throws from McClure pushed the advantage to 30-2 and the Lady Spartans never looked back.

Stewart led all scorers with 19 points, to go along with six assists and five rebounds.

The all-state senior talked about her final game on her home floor.

McClure finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists and she also talked about the win over the Lady Grizzlies.

Workman scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists.

Brooklyn Nunley led Nicholas County with 11 points, while Jones scored eight and Hannah Thomas added seven points.
