Shady Spring 63, Nicholas County 35

Shady Spring opened Class AAA Region 3 play Thursday with a strong win over Nicholas County, 63-35.

The Tigers smothered the Grizzlies defensively, building a 17-6 advantage in the first eight minutes before adding seven more points to the lead in the second period.

Gabe Short led Shady Spring with 21 points, while going 5-for-10 from behind the arc. Jace Lilly added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Coby Dillon also finished with 11 points, while Jace Bailey tallied nine points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists.

Cutter Boggs scored seven points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals. Malachi Flohr added four points.

Full Nicholas County stats were unavailable, but the Grizzlies struggled from the field shooting 11-for 49.

Greenbrier East stuns AAA No. 2 Capital

Greenbrier East 55, Capital 52

The Spartans opened AAA Region 3 play with a win over AAA No. 2 Capital 55-52.

Darius Burns led four Spartans in double figures with 14 points, followed by Braylen Godfrey and Nate Dixon with 13 points apiece. Brody Hamric added 10 points.

Kahsi Morgan paced the Cougars with 17 points.

Greenbrier East will travel to Shady Spring Tuesday for a semifinal clash with the Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m. and the winner advances to the state tournament.

Crusaders cruise past Golden Knights

The Crusaders outscored Mount View in every quarter and cruised to a 72-45 win in the quarterfinal match-up of the Class A Region 3 Tournament.

Iziah Gordon led Greater Beckley with 20 points, followed by Eli Gunter and Javonte Spencer with 18 points apiece. Jabari Spencer added nine points.

Tanner Castle scored 11 for the Golden Knights and Zaylen Jackson had nine.

Greater Beckley will host Greenbrier West Wednesday at the Helton Family Center at 7 p.m. in the semis for a berth in the state tournament.

Greenbrier West holds off rival Meadow Bridge

The Cavaliers rolled out to a 40-20 lead at the break and held on to defeat Meadow Bridge 63-50 in the Class A Region 3 quarterfinal clash.

Kamden Sams and Shane Plogger paced West with 15 points apiece, while Colton Dunbar had 14 points.

Trent Roles had 15 points for the Wildcats and Jonah Fox scored 13 points.

Greenbrier West travels to Greater Beckley Christian Wednesday for a battle with the Crusaders at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the state tournament.
