
Volleyball Regional Recap: Heavyweights flexing their muscle
Woodrow Wilson, Shady Spring, Herbert Hoover, James Monroe, Wyoming East, Greenbrier West and Sherman in the driver's seat after week one of the Volleyball regionals

Week one of the volleyball regionals are in the books and several area teams sit one win away from a trip to the state volleyball tournament.
No. 2-seed Woodrow Wilson opened Class AAAA South Regional play with a dominant, 3-0 (best-of-5 match) win over No. 7 Huntington.

The night became even better for the Flying Eagles when No. 2 George Washington dropped its match to No. 7 Parkersburg South.
Woodrow Wilson and the Patriots will now battle Monday in Beckley with the winner advancing to the state volleyball tournament, Nov. 11-13.
The loser will drop into the elimination bracket in the double elimination format.
Class AAA No. 2-seed Shady Spring has been a frequent visitor to the state tournament and the Tigers also stand one win away from another trip to Charleston.
So far, Shady Spring has swept Nicholas County in the opening round, as well as No. 3-seed Ripley on Thursday night.
Shady Spring will host the winner of Ripley and Princeton Monday in the championship round.
The Vikings and the Tigers will battle at 5:30 p.m. for the right to play Shady Spring.
Herbert Hoover is the top-seed in AAA Region 3 and the Huskies have dominated as expected.

After sweeping PikeView in round one, Hoover defeated Greenbrier East 3-0 Thursday.
Capital, who lost to East in round one, eliminated PikeView Thursday and will now play the Spartans Monday in Clendenin for the right to battle Hoover.
James Monroe and Wyoming East both qualified for the 2024 state tournament and are in the driver's seat in Class AA Region 3 for a return trip.
The Mavericks advanced to the championship series with 3-0 wins over Bluefield and Liberty.
The No. 3-seeded Warriors swept River View in the opening round before beating Independence 3-0 Thursday in Coal City.
Midland Trail remained alive Thursday be sweeping Summers County. The Patriots will now play Bluefield Monday at James Monroe in the elimination round. That winner will play Liberty.
James Monroe awaits the survivor in Wednesday's championship round.
River View kept its season going with a win over Mingo Central Thursday in the elimination round.
The Raiders will play Westside Monday at Independence with the winner advancing to play the host team.

Wyoming East will play the winner Wednesday for the championship.
Greenbrier West and Sherman are in the top spot in Class A Region 3.
The defending state champion Cavaliers wiped out Webster County Tuesday before beating Mount View 3-1 Thursday.
The Golden Knights swept Meadow Bridge in round one and the Highlanders eliminated the Wildcats in round two.
Mount View will play Webster County Monday at Greenbrier West. The winner advances to play the Cavaliers in the championship.
Greater Beckley topped Montcalm Tuesday before falling to the Tide Thursday in straight sets.
The Crusaders and the Generals will meet again Monday in Seth with the winner moving on to the championship series against Sherman.
The regional volleyball tournaments are double elimination formats with two teams advancing to the state tournament.
